Transportation
Air Travel
OR Tambo International Airport is the
major gateway, offering both domestic, African regional and international
connections. Altogether there are more than 30 airports in SA, ranging
from smaller airports for cross-border flights to and from neighbouring
countries to larger airports for flights to and from South Africa.
South Africa has a number of airlines flying between its major cities, and to some of its smaller ones, with fares ranging from first-class to cut-price economy. Flights can be booked online from anywhere in the world and payments can be done by credit card or directly into the relevant bank account.
Car Hire
Public roads in South Africa are well developed
and well sign-posted with driving done on the left hand side of the
road. To hire a vehicle, drivers must have an international drivers
license and a minimum of five (5) years experience. Tempest Car Hire
has an office based at the Birchwood hotel.
Minibus Taxis
Minibus taxis are the preferred transport
option for many locals. They are unmarked, operating with neither timetables
nor formal stops.
Metered Taxi
There are conventional metered taxis.
Reception staff can make arrangements for visitors and must generally
be summonsed by telephone.
Trains
The Metrorail network in Gauteng is based
in Johannesburg and has regular services to neighbouring towns and
countries. However the routes are limited in reaching all areas and
requires inter modal links such as busses or taxis when accessing some
destinations.

but can be few and far between in certain centres. Intercity travel
is serviced by coach companies and includes international companies
like Greyhound and Translux.
